Nigerian President Seeks Amicable Solution to Niger Crisis

NIAMEY: President of Nigeria has called for an amicable solution to the crisis in Niger to bring stability in the country.

Bola Tinubu was talking to the delegations from the regional bloc ECOWAS saying they should take any step to resolve the worsening situation in Niger.

Following last week’s coup, the bloc has visited different regional states and Niger to address the matter.

Earlier ECOWAS asked Niger’s coup leaders to restore democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum in a week otherwise face the military intervention.

A delegation, led by Nigerian leader Abdulsalami Abubakar reached Niamey on Thursday, to meet coup leaders. Another delegation will hold meetings with leaders of Algeria and Libya.

The head of the presidential guards General Abdourahmane Tchiani declared himself as the new leader of Niger.

Niger coup continues to draw int’l ire

The coup, which marked the seventh military takeover in West and Central Africa within three years, has garnered condemnation from the African Union, the UN, the EU, and other international powers.

The US and Britain have already announced to call back half of their diplomats from Niger.

France has evacuated 1,079 people from Niger, including nationals of other European states.

Meanwhile, United States President Joe Biden called for the immediate release of Niger’s elected President, Mohamed Bazoum.

The World Bank in another development has halted payments to Niger as it was alarmed by attempts to overthrow an elected President in the country.

The Saudi cabinet during a recent meeting has strongly rejected the coup in Niger and called for protecting the national interests of the country.
