RIYADH: After a 14-hour procedure in Riyadh, a team of Saudi doctors on Thursday successfully split conjoined twins Hassana and Hassina from Nigeria.

The King Abdullah Specialty Hospital for Children in King Abdulaziz Medical City’s special surgical team previously reported the twins’ stable condition.

Both Hassana and Hassina, who were born on January 12 of last year in Kaduna, Nigeria, had the same liver, intestines, abdomen, pelvis, urinary system, and reproductive system.

Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, an adviser to the Saudi Royal Court and the supervisor-general of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre, is in charge of the 85-member interdisciplinary team, which also comprises 35 medical and surgical specialists, nurses, and technical employees.

Al-Rabeeah stated there will be eight steps to the operation before it started. On the orders of King Salman of Saudi Arabia, the surgery was performed.

Hassana and Hassina will be the 56th set of twins to be split as a consequence of Saudi Arabia’s humanitarian efforts, which have previously helped with 130 cases of conjoined twins from 23 nations over a period of 33 years.

“I take this opportunity to once again thank the custodian of the two holy mosques, the crown prince, and the entire leadership of the Kingdom for this kind humanitarian gesture extended to these conjoined Nigerian twins, Hassana and Hassina,” said Yahaya Lawal, Nigeria’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia.

Nigeria is overjoyed to see this day, the ongoing procedure to separate the conjoined twins, and I’m overjoyed to say on behalf of Nigeria’s federal government that we anticipate a happy outcome.

We express our gratitude to Dr. Al-Rabeeah and the entire medical staff for their assistance with this delicate procedure. May Allah bless them, their endeavours, the Kingdom, and the entire Saudi population. Nigeria will always be appreciative of this thoughtful humanitarian gesture.

“We understand a number of stages have been successfully carried out,” the ambassador continued, “and look forward to successfully completing the remaining stages.”
