MAIDUGURI: Eight people were killed while 60 others kidnapped by gunmen in two communities of northwest Zamfara state of Nigeria on Sunday.
Western media reported that Zamfara is one of the states badly hit by adductions for ransom by armed gangs known locally as bandits.
President Bola Tinubu is yet to spell out how he will control the unrest in the country.
Gunmen attacked an army base in Magami community
Residents told media that armed gunmen tried to attack a forward army base in a rural Magami community of Zamfara but were repelled.
A traditional leader on condition of anonymity told media that the gunmen had divided themselves into three groups, the one that attacked the army installation and two others who attacked Magami and nearby Kabasa communities.
He said 60 people, mostly women and children were abducted by the gunmen.

Shuaibu Haruna, a resident of Magami said that the bandits were riding on motorcycles with guns and other weapons. He added four people were killed during the attack.
Isa Mohd from the Kabasa community told media that said four people were also killed and dozens of others abducted.
Attacks in the northwest part of Nigeria are part of widespread insecurity in the country. Insurgents carry out deadly attacks in the northeast, gangs and separatists attack security forces and government infrastructure in the southeast.
