LONDON: In a candid interview with The Guardian, the Surfer star Nicolas Cage reflected on a role that pushed him well beyond his comfort zone.
“The most difficult performance was The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, because I was portraying a character named Nick Cage—and I couldn’t hide behind it,” shared the 61-year-old actor.
The film centres on a fictionalised version of Cage grappling with anxieties about his career, as well as complicated relationships with his ex-wife, Olivia (played by Sharon Horgan), and daughter (played by Lily Mo Sheen).
Reflecting further, Cage admitted, “It was incredibly uncomfortable. I felt very exposed.”
Embarrassing role
“In some ways, it was even embarrassing, playing a role that referred to himself as Nicolas or Nick Cage,” added the Snowden star.
Elsewhere in the interview, Cage touched on how different he is in real life compared to the persona many associate with him.
“I think people form an idea of me based on the characters I’ve played on screen. But in truth, I find myself rather dull,” the Lord of War actor confessed.
He went on, “I don’t really go out. I’m at home most of the time. I’d much rather spend time with my two-year-old daughter. I’m not antisocial—I just enjoy a quiet, simple life. That might surprise some people.”
