WELLINGTON: Amid Russia’s war on Ukraine, ambulances with medical supplies from New Zealand reached the war-torn country on Monday after a three-month journey.

The charity organization Kiwi Aid and Refugee Evacuation’s leader Tenby Powell said that seven ambulances filled with medical aid were dispatched to Ukraine through Poland.

The ambulances arrived at the Ukraine-Polish border early on Monday, Anadolu Agency reported.

Powell said the ambulances started the journey on 4 May and finally reached the Antwerp port in Belgium last week.

He said the aid supplied would be handed over to red zone hospitals after arriving in the capital city of Kyiv. He added that they just wanted to ensure the aid supplies go to the right hospitals and the right medical units.

The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, which erupted in February last year, has killed more than 9,300 civilians and injured over 16,600, according to the latest UN figures.
