WELLINGTON: New Zealand on Wednesday established the Centre for Climate Action on Agriculture Emissions to support farmers in maintaining an international competitive lead.

The newly opened center is part of Budget 2022, which will work for reducing agriculture emissions through research and development. It also included a new public-private 50-50 joint venture.

The agriculture sector is contributing nearly fifty percent of New Zealand’s gross greenhouse gas emissions and nearly 91 percent of the biogenic methane emissions.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said in the launching ceremony organized during the country’s annual agricultural show that the climate center will support farmers to increase primary industry exports, maintain international competitive lead and reduce emissions.

A 27 million NZ dollars ($16.8 million) fund will be invested into three new projects to promote sustainable economic growth and reduce emissions.

New Zealand has recorded a significant growth of 39 percent in industries export since 2017 and it was now contributing over 53 billion NZ dollars ($33 billion) to the country’s economy. –APP/Xinhua
