WELLINGTON, New Zealand: New Zealand’s Defence Minister Judith Collins has condemned the derogatory online comments directed at Commander Yvonne Gray, the captain of the navy ship HMNZS Manawanui, which sank off the coast of Samoa.

Describing the remarks as “vile” and “misogynistic,” Collins expressed her dismay over the persistent discrimination faced by women in the military, stating, “Seriously, it’s 2024. What the hell’s going on here?”

The HMNZS Manawanui ran aground while conducting a survey near Upolu, Samoa, leading to a fire and subsequent sinking. Thankfully, all 75 crew members were evacuated safely, sustaining only minor injuries. While the investigation into the cause of the incident is ongoing, Collins emphasized that the captain’s gender had no bearing on the situation. Instead, she praised Gray for her leadership and experience, highlighting her 30 years in the navy.

The sinking raised environmental concerns regarding potential fuel spills, but officials reported that leaks were diminishing. The New Zealand government has initiated a military court of inquiry into the incident, demonstrating the seriousness with which they are approaching the matter.

Collins’ statements underscore a broader concern regarding the treatment of women in the armed forces, where female representation stands at around 20%. As New Zealand’s first female defence minister, Collins voiced her support for Gray and other women in leadership positions within the military, such as Major General Rose King, the first woman army chief. She asserted that appointments in the military should be based on merit, urging a cultural shift to eradicate misogyny in both the armed forces and society at large.

As the inquiry continues, Collins and other officials are committed to addressing the operational challenges surrounding the naval incident while also tackling the societal attitudes that perpetuate discrimination against women in traditionally male-dominated fields.
