LONDON: UK’s Royal Mail began selling the first postage stamps featuring the picture of King Charles III on Tuesday, after his ascension to the chair in September.

The King’s portrait, revealed in February and approved by the King himself, will now appear on all Royal Mail stamps alongside the stamp’s barcode, ahead of his coronation in upcoming month.

The “definitive stamp” intended for daily use — is modified from the official model that appears on new United Kingdom coins.

Retailers will continue selling current stamps containing the image of late Queen Elizabeth II and will be provided with the new one when stocks run out.

According to AFP, the new stamps are already on auction on the website. The picture of Charles III is adapted from an image by the UK sculptor Martin Jennings developed for fresh UK coins, which are already in circulation in the country.

The fresh design shows Charles III facing left, as all British kings have done on stamps since 1840.

In a statement, the Royal Mail said that the release comes a day following stamp prices were raised by the postal service so that it could continue “sustainable”,.
