The Hague: The Netherlands has said it will ban cell phones from classrooms in a bid to stop tech disrupting lessons.
The Dutch government said that mobiles, smartwatches, and tablets are disturbing the process of students’ learning and would not be allowed in classrooms from next year.
It said that there was increasing evidence that cell phones have a harmful effect during classes. Students are less able to focus and their performance suffers, AFP reported on Wednesday.
Government asks schools to agree on phone rules
The government has asked school administrations to agree internal rules and regulations with teachers, parents and students by October.
The government has not yet imposed the ban, but said it reserved the right to do so after checking progress next year.
Education Minister Robbert Dijkgraaf told the legislature that he hoped the step would usher in a cultural transformation and improve learning.
