Netflix has planned to start cracking down on password sharing in 2023. After allowing users to transfer their profiles to new accounts, the streaming service said it would begin allowing customers to create sub-accounts next year as part of its more significant intentions to “monetize account sharing,” according to the Verge.

The streaming service acquired 2.4 million users this quarter as it prepares to debut its ad-supported tier next month and crack down on password sharing. Netflix claims to have gained 104,000 paid subscribers in the US and Canada in the previous three months, up from 73,000 in the same period last year.

However, the company’s subscriber count dropped by another 1.3 million in the US and Canada and by 1 million globally last quarter. Earlier this year, Netflix reported losing members for the first time since the previous decade. Netflix has also been gently urging users away from password sharing as a fix. In tests run by the firm, consumers in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru were asked to pay an additional fee for a sub-account if Netflix discovered that the owner’s membership was being used by someone else apart from themselves.

According to Mike Verdu, Netflix’s vice president of games, the business recently announced that it was “seriously considering” a cloud gaming solution to expand the number of games available for play on TVs and PCs.
