Precious Power: NEPRA Hikes Energy Tariff for K-Electric Consumers

ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved another hike in power tariff by Rs0.18 per unit for K-Electric consumers for November.

The NEPRA conducted a public hearing on a petition submitted by K-Electric on account of fuel charge adjustments (FCA) for November 2022, a statement said on Monday.

The NEPRA approved the hike in the electricity price after the hearing. Electricity price has been increased by 18 paise per unit for the month of November, while NEPRA will issue a detailed decision later. Lifeline consumers, consumers using 300 units, and electric vehicle charging stations will be exempted from the new hike.

“K Electric had submitted a request to increase the price of electricity in the quarterly adjustment for consumers”, while the federal government submitted the request to NEPRA to increase the price of electricity for Karachi. According to the NEPRA, a request was made to increase the price of electricity by 3 rupees 30 paise per unit for the electricity consumers of Karachi.

There was a proposal to increase the price of electricity for 4 months for electricity consumers, the hearing on this request was held on December 27.

NPCC member from Sindh Rafiq Shaikh said that electricity generation from local gas and coal improved in November.

Rafiq Sheikh raised the question that if the demand for electricity was low in November, then why load shedding is being done in the country?

The NEPRA said that electricity consumers will have to pay extra next month as the closure of the Neelum Jhelum plant produced less electricity than hydro in November.

After the hearing, NEPRA approved increasing the cost of electricity by 18 paise for November.
