ISLAMABAD: Despite widespread consumer protests against inflated electricity bills, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved an increase of Rs1.46 per unit in electricity prices.
This adjustment is attributed to the monthly fuel charges for July and will come into effect from September, impacting electricity bills for the upcoming month.
In a notification issued by NEPRA, it was specified that this price hike would not apply to lifeline consumers and K-Electric consumers.
The decision to increase electricity prices comes at a time when protests are already taking place across the country due to inflated electricity bills and high taxes.
Protests Against Inflated Electricity Bills
Protests have been staged in various cities, including Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta, Hyderabad, Okara, Jhang, Sadiqabad, and Malakand. Demonstrators have resorted to symbolic acts such as burning their electricity bills, blocking highways, besieging power company offices, and calling on the government for relief measures.
