KARACHI: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) on Wednesday approved K-electric’s request for a Rs 2.87 per unit increase in power tariffs for Karachi.

The NEPRA endorsed the electricity tariff hike in response to the quarterly fuel adjustment, marking the second time it has been approved. With this increase, the cumulative burden on Karachi power consumers due to quarterly fuel adjustments will amount to Rs 4.12. The approval covers the adjustment period from January to March 2023.

The decision by the power regulatory authority has been forwarded to the federal government for notification. Earlier, at the behest of the caretaker government, NEPRA sanctioned the tariff hike to maintain a uniform electricity tariff nationwide.

As outlined in the official notification, NEPRA approved a rise of Rs 1.72 per unit for K-Electric (KE) consumers, attributed to third-quarterly adjustment charges for the previous financial year. The notification detailed an increase of Rs 1.25 per unit for the adjustment period from January to March 2023, along with Rs 0.47 per unit sanctioned for the adjustment period from October to December 2022.

NEPRA has officially communicated the decision of the electric tariff hike to the federal government, while electricity consumers in Karachi will be subject to additional charges in their bills from January to March 2024.
