ISLAMABAD: National Electric Power Regulatory (NEPRA) has announced its approval to make electricity cheaper by 32 paisa per unit.

This reduction in electric price will be adjusted to the October monthly fuel adjustment in the consumers’ electricity bill. In a NEPRA hearing regarding monthly fuel price adjustment in Islamabad, NEPRA also said that this decision of electricity price reduction is not applicable for Lifeline (Electricity consumers of less than 200 units per month) and K-Electric electricity consumers. In this regard, NEPRA will issue a detailed decision later.

NEPRA faces economic burden

Chairman NEPRA Tauseef Farooqi said that country is facing a shortage of dollars and due to high global fuel prices, purchasing power of NEPRA to purchase fuel and energy resources is limited. NEPRA officials said that due to the violation of merit order in fuel adjustment, NEPRA faced an additional burden of Rs 30 crore 36 lakhs. Due to the shortage of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) availability, NEPRA has faced a burden of Rs 259.8 million. In three years, the shortage of LNG caused an additional burden of Rs 40 billion on electricity consumers, NEPRA officials added.
