NDMA Releases Guidelines for Cold-wave Management in Pakistan’s Northern Areas

ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has released a detailed guideline for the management of cold-wave as extremely low temperatures were being recorded in the Northern parts of the country.

The NDMA guideline stated that the northern part of the country was currently experiencing cold-wave-like conditions and exceptionally low temperatures, which could intensify in the coming days. The Authority stated that in accordance with the recommendation, prompt action must be taken to guarantee both personal and collective safety during extreme weather conditions.

The twin cities saw its coldest day of the year so far yesterday as the temperature dropped to -1°C. This

cold wave will last for several more days, according to the Met Office.

Pakistan Meteorological Department (Met) has forecast cold or partly cloudy weather in most parts of the country. While very cold in the upper areas while rain or snowfall is expected in Balochistan.

Air quality

The air quality in Lahore is 207 US AQI; in Bahawalpur, it is 169, 178 in Muridke, 195 in Faisalabad, and 186 in Rawalpindi. In Sindh, the air quality in Karachi is 227 US AQI 174 in Mirpur Khas, while Islamabad’s air quality stands at 154. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), the air quality in Peshawar is 179, while 55 in Abbottabad.

Recorded temperatures

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (MET), a maximum of 4 degrees Celsius (°C) temperature was recorded in Islamabad, 9°C in Lahore, 15°C in Karachi, 3°C in Peshawar, 2°C in Quetta, and 2°C in Gilgit.

Minimum recorded temperatures

Today’s Recorded Lowest Minimum Temperature’s (°C): Kalam -17, Leh-15, Astore -12, Skardu -09, Ziarat, Bagrote, Malam Jabba -07, Mastung, Dir, Parachinar, Rawalakot, Kalat -06, Quetta and Pashin -05.
