ISLAMABAD: The National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Pakistan on Sunday inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen the cooperation and collaboration on initiatives relating to the promotion and protection of human rights of migrants, particularly those in vulnerable situations.

The MoU highlights the commitment of both organizations to prioritize the migrants’ well-being and human, recognizing that while migration in the context of globalization brings immense opportunities, it is important to facilitate orderly, safe, and regular movement of people.

Under the MoU, both bodies will engage in joint activities aimed at generating evidence and research, increasing awareness and outreach, and providing policy advice in line with the priorities of the government of Pakistan.

NCHR Chairperson Rabiya Javeria Agha underlined the lack of rights for migrants and the dangerous journeys they undertake, saying that the Greek migrant’s boat disaster was a heart-wrenching reminder of the risk people take in their desire to seek a better future.

She said that more than 2,000 lives have been lost in the Mediterranean this year alone, and irregular migration demands immediate attention. Through collective efforts, a safer and more compassionate approach to migration could be adopted, one that upholds the dignity and well-being of those in search of a better future.

She added that the recently signed MoU between IOM Pakistan and NCHR will play a crucial role in advancing this goal.

Expressing concerns about the risks faced by migrants and the situation of vulnerability, IOM Pakistan chief Mio Sato said that the signing of this MoU came extremely on time amid the evolving migration trends and the dire need for evidence-based solutions.

She said that the NCHR and IOM have been collaborating on different advocacy activities; however, having a formal partnership will allow them to do more within their respective mandates and ensure that the support is targeted towards those most in need.
