KARACHI: Pakistani music is incomplete if pop diva Nazia Hassan is not mentioned. It has been 23 years on her songs are still a heartthrob of millions.
She parted ways from this world on August 13, 2000, battling cancer and at the age of 35 she breathed her last.
She started as a child star at the age of 10 and rose to level of an international icon in 1980 with her song Aap Jaisa Koi that was used in Indian film Qurbani.
The door to international stardom opened to her and her debut album Disco Deewane released next year in 1981 was charted in 14 countries worldwide. That album was rated as the best Asian pop record at that time.
She along with her brother Zoheb enjoyed the star status as the two went on to sell over 65 million records worldwide.
Nazia Hassan’s song Dreamer Deewane in English made her the first Pakistani to appear in the British musical scene.
She won numerous award and at the age of 15 she is the youngest recipient to date with Indian Filmfare Award. She was also conferred with Pride of Performance.
UNICEF conferred with the role of cultural ambassador in 1991 and her last album Camera Camera in 1992 was part of a campaign against drugs.
Born in 1965 April 3, she is remembered as a Queen of Pop.
