LAHORE: Nawaz Sharif, the three-time prime minister, presided over a meeting at the Governor’s House on Wednesday to strategize on strengthening the PML-N’s position in southern Punjab in the upcoming February 8 general elections.
This meeting occurred just a day after a significant agreement was reached with the MQM-P. The meeting was attended by PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, the party’s chief organizer, Provincial Head Rana Sanaullah, close aide Pervaiz Rashid, and other senior party figures. Punjab Governor Balighur Rehman hosted the gathering.
Sources indicate that Nawaz directed PML-N leaders to enhance the party’s organizational structure and engage with local community leaders to attract voters in southern Punjab.
Before this, the former prime minister had visited the Governor’s House to offer condolences to Rehman over the loss of his wife.
Recent political activities suggest that Nawaz Sharif, a seasoned politician, is now deeply involved in the party and election-related matters. The PML-N relies on him to reinvigorate its organization and supporters after the Shehbaz-led government faced criticism over its inability to address record-high inflation, which had escalated into an unprecedented cost-of-living crisis.

On Tuesday, the PML-N and the MQM jointly announced their decision to contest the upcoming elections. One of the visiting leaders, Mustafa Kamal, acknowledged Nawaz’s seniority in the region, stating that no one could match his experience.
This announcement followed discussions among PML-N leaders about forming an electoral alliance with the MQM-P and the JUI-F.
In a related development, the PML-N appointed Bashir Memon as its Sindh chapter president. Memon, a recent addition to the party, is recognized for advocating closer electoral cooperation with other parties to establish a strong presence in the province, both in rural and urban areas.
