ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s former Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, stated on Wednesday that if his Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) secured a simple majority in Thursday’s parliamentary elections, party supremo Nawaz Sharif will be the candidate for Prime Minister post.
Shehbaz Sharif added that in the event of failing to secure a simple majority, the party will decide on the premier’s candidate after consultations.
In an interview with a private news channel, Shehbaz Sharif highlighted that if the PML-N comes into power after the general elections, his government will prioritize significant decisions, including potential involvement in an IMF program. He also advocated for the privatization of loss-making national entities, crediting his party with averting a national default.
Attributing recent bomb blasts to efforts aimed at discouraging voter participation, Shehbaz Sharif criticized the previous Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government for decisions that allegedly contributed to increased terrorism.
PML-N candidates are slated to contest on 212 NA constituencies nationwide, with key leaders such as Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, and Hamza Shehbaz participating in crucial constituencies.
In a strategic move to strengthen its position, the PML-N has formed seat adjustments with Jahangir Tareen’s IPP. Recent surveys have shown a lead for the PML-N over its rivals, sparking speculation about Nawaz Sharif’s potential return to power for a fourth term.
