DUBAI: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supreme leader and former prime minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, accompanied by his daughter Maryam Nawaz Sharif, on Sunday held a series of meetings with the Dubai Royal family members following their arrival in the Middle Eastern country.

Nawaz arrived in Dubai from London, while Maryam, her son Junaid Safdar, and other family members arrived from Lahore. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif remains in London but is expected to return to Pakistan soon.

Nawaz Sharif is currently staying at the Emirates Hill residence of Ali Dar, the son of Ishaq Dar. According to a local news channel, Nawaz and Maryam left Ali Dar’s residence in a convoy of cars, accompanied by Dubai authorities’ protocol. The former prime minister traveled from London with his son Hussain Nawaz, Asma, and Dr. Adnan Khan.

Nawaz Sharif Receives Protocol from Dubai Govt

Upon arrival at the airport, Nawaz received protocol from Dubai government officials, who have also arranged for his security. Local media reported that Nawaz and Maryam attended six meetings on Sunday, including one with prominent businessmen. It is understood that discussions were held regarding Nawaz’s return to Pakistan, with PML-N sources indicating that the former premier will be returning in the near future.

The prospects of Nawaz’s return gained momentum on Sunday as the National Assembly amended a law that limited the disqualification of parliamentarians to a maximum of five years, thus opening the way for individuals banned for life from running for public office. Both Nawaz and Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) chief Jahangir Khan Tareen are expected to benefit from this legislation.

The Supreme Court had disqualified both senior politicians in June and December 2017, respectively, under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution. The Senate had previously approved a bill seeking amendments to Section 232 (Qualifications and Disqualifications) of the Election Act, 2017.
