BRUSSELS: NATO’s highest military body is set to gather in Brussels on Thursday, with defense chiefs from Allied states convening for a crucial Military Committee meeting, as outlined in an official statement issued on Wednesday.

The meeting will include the participation of Sweden as an invitee, sparking discussions regarding the Nordic nation’s potential entry into the alliance. Notably, Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) Gen. Christopher Cavoli and Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (SACT) Gen. Philippe Lavigne will join the proceedings via video link.

NATO’s Military Leaders to Discuss Range of Topics

A range of topics will be discussed during the meeting, encompassing discussions on deterrence capacities, readiness, and a comprehensive assessment of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The statement emphasized that during the last session of the day, the Chiefs of Defense will meet in a NATO-Ukraine Council format to discuss Russia’s aggressive actions against Ukraine, the current situation on the ground, and NATO’s sustained support to Ukraine.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg is expected to join the meeting during its final stage, where discussions will revolve around “political objectives and guidance ahead of the Defense Ministerial in February 2024 and the Washington D.C Summit in July 2024.”

The Military Committee holds significance as NATO’s premier military authority and is the oldest permanent body within the alliance. It plays a crucial role in advising both the North Atlantic Council and the Nuclear Planning Group.
