BRUSSELS:  NATO on Wednesday denounced Moscow’s “dangerous” moves to block Ukrainian grain exports in the Black Sea after urgent consultations with Ukraine following Russia’s withdrawal from a UN-backed agreement.

In a statement, the NATO military alliance said, “Allies and Kyiv strongly denounced Russia’s decision to withdraw from the Black Sea grain agreement and its deliberate actions to stop Ukraine’s agricultural exports on which hundreds of millions of people depend across the world,”.

“They also censured Russia’s recent missile assaults on Odesa, Mykolaiv, and other cities, including Moscow’s cynical drone attack on the Ukrainian grain storage facility in the Danube,” the statement added.

NATO Warns Russia

NATO said a warning from Moscow to vessels in the region covered NATO member Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone and “created new risks for escalation and miscalculation”.

“Moscow bears complete responsibility for its dangerous and escalatory acts in the Black Sea region,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg added.

“Russia’s acts also pose considerable risks to the stability of the Black Sea region, which is of strategic significance to NATO. Allies are also stepping up support to Kyiv and increasing our watchfulness.”

The meeting Wednesday was the 2nd of a new NATO-Ukraine Council that was inaugurated by Ukraine’s President Zelensky at the NATO summit in Lithuania in the current month.

Ukraine called the dialogue after Russia unilaterally withdrew last week from the agreement aimed at securing Kyiv’s exports through the Black Sea deal.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow withdrew from the Black Sea grain agreement because it lost meaning.  The agreement was inked to ensure the safe export of Ukrainian grains, Reuters reported.   Russian President expressed his remarks in an article published on the Kremlin’s website. He wrote, “The continuance of the ‘deal’ – which did not justify its humanitarian objective- has lost its worth”.

Moscow pulled out of a United Nations (UN) agreement on Monday that ensured safe passage for grain consignments crossing the Black Sea.
