ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) has taken steps to strengthen its ties with the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), an international regulatory body, to boost the recognition of Pakistan’s National Licensing Exam (NLE) around the world.
According to a PMC spokesperson, the initiative was launched to enhance the professional prospects of the nation’s medical and dentistry graduates. The PMC has formally started the WFME’s recognition procedure. According to the spokesperson, WFME approval of the NLE is necessary for the international acceptance of medical graduates from Pakistan.

He explained that for Pakistani doctors to practice abroad, particularly in the United States (US), they must first pass the WFME exam, which will include a physical visit and take place within 12 to 15 months of the 2024 deadline.
In addition, the PMC intends to hold seminars and workshops in medical colleges across the country over the next four months to prepare staff and students for the WFME visit. The physical visit and examination were the last steps in the WFME recognition procedure, which took the commission over 18 months to complete.
It was necessary for the 2022 national medical and dental curricula and the revised 2022 national criteria for recognition of medical and dental colleges and teaching hospitals to get initial approval before the formal application to WFME could be submitted. These requirements were recently approved and notified following the National Medical and Dental Academic Board’s invaluable and enormous effort.
