‘National Assembly Will Be Dissolved on August 9’, Shehbaz Sharif Tells Coalition Parties

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has told his coalition partners that the summary to dissolve the country’s National Assembly would be moved on August 9, local media reported on Thursday.

As per a report of local television, the assurance was given by Shehbaz Sharif during a dinner he hosted for leaders of coalition government. Sources added that they also discussed the overall political situation of the country and upcoming general elections.

The television claimed that the Prime Minister apprised his coalition partners that he would start consultations with the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly on a caretaker Prime Minister soon.

The incumbent assembly’s term will end on August 12 and if it completes its specified period then general elections will be conducted within 60 days.

Earlier, media reported that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the two main political parties in the coalition government agreed to dissolve the National Assembly on August 8.

The National Assembly’s current five-year constitutional term will end at midnight on August 12, after four days after the reported date.

According to the sources, the People’s Party proposed dissolving the assembly on August 8. Legal experts have also suggested August 8 to the government.  Sources said that August 9 and 10 were also considered to dissolve the National Assembly.

According to legal experts, the assembly will be dissolved after 48 hours if the president does not approve the summary. It should be noted that the National Assembly lasts until 12 midnight on August 12.  Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that on August 12, 2023, “we will hand over the affairs to the caretaker government.”
