BANGKOK: In the troubled region of southeastern Myanmar, a recent bomb blast near the Thanlwin bridge checkpoint has resulted in one fatality and wounded 12 others.

The incident occurred on Monday, adding to the grim toll of violence that has plagued the nation since the military ousted Aung San Suu Kyi’s civilian government in February 2021.

The aftermath of the coup has been characterized by a brutal crackdown on dissent, leading to the loss of thousands of lives. In response to the military’s actions, the “People’s Defense Force” (PDF) militias have risen to challenge the junta’s authority, further escalating the conflict. Additionally, long-established ethnic rebel armies, controlling vast areas of territory near Myanmar’s borders, have become part of the conflict, according to Arab News.

The bomb detonation, which occurred at approximately 6:50 a.m. local time, targeted a vehicle close to the Thanlwin Bridge checkpoint. The checkpoint is known for its stringent security measures. The explosion resulted in injuries to around 13 people, including passengers and security personnel, as reported by a government official from the Karen State administration council. Tragically, one of the injured succumbed to their wounds upon reaching the hospital.

The identity of the perpetrators behind the bomb attack remains unknown, as no group has claimed responsibility. The situation in Myanmar remains complex and highly volatile, with the junta engaged in battles against numerous ethnic rebel outfits.

The devastating impact of the coup and subsequent conflicts cannot be understated. According to a local monitoring group, over 3,800 lives have been lost since the military coup began, underscoring the urgent need for peace and stability in the country.
