KARACHI/ISLAMABAD: It goes without saying that chicken is the new mutton now, with chicken prices in Pakistan reaching historic highs and poultry meat being sold at Rs. 700-720 per kilogram in the country’s commercial hub Karachi.
In the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, a kilogram of poultry meat was available for Rs. 700-705.
Meanwhile, in Lahore, the second most populous city of the country, chicken meat was being sold at Rs. 550-600 per kg.
This price hike is reportedly owing to the closure of several poultry businesses due to a feed shortage, local media reported.
Skyrocketing chicken prices leave public high and dry
The skyrocketing chicken prices have raised concerns all over the country as it is a comparatively cheaper meat option widely utilised by middle and lower middle-class consumers in functions and as a source of protein.
The poultry industry is a major part of Pakistan’s economy, and any disruptions to its supply chain can significantly impact the food security and economic stability in the country.
Reportedly, the government is investigating the cause of the feed shortage and sorting out ways to provide relief to consumers affected by the surge in prices.
Alongside poultry, prices of other commodities, mainly edibles such as tea and fruits have also seen a sharpe surge in recent days.
