WASHINGTON: A New York City hospital has sacked a Palestinian American Muslim nurse after she called Israel’s war on Gaza a “genocide”.
She was making an acceptance speech for an award for her work with mothers who lost their children during childbirth and pregnancy.
A spokesperson of the hospital, NYU Langone Health, on Thursday, said nurse Hesen Jabr had previously been warned not to bring her views into the workplace.
Jabr in a post on Instagram said that she was handed a termination letter later in the month.
During her acceptance speech, she spoke about mothers who had lost babies during the war in Gaza.
A spokesperson for the hospital in an email said Jabr had been warned in December, not to bring her personal views into the workplace.

The spokesperson said some of the guests were upset after her comments. He said as a result, Jabr is no longer employee of the NYU Langone.
Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza has killed over 36,000 in the past eight months, the local health ministry says. The war has also caused widespread famine in the Palestinian enclave and displaced nearly its entire 2.3 million population.
