LONDON: A British Pakistani Muslim MP from Birmingham and former barrister Shabana Mahmood on Friday was named as lord chancellor and secretary of state for justice in the new Labour government.
Mahmood was the former shadow minister to walk into Downing Street after Sir Keir Starmer’s appointment as new British prime minister. She will be the first Muslim and the second woman to assume the office of lord chancellor.
Mahmood, 43, was elected as Member of Parliament for Birmingham Ladywood in 2010. She was born and brought up in Birmingham and called to the bar after studying on a scholarship. She specialized in professional indemnity cases.
The Oxford graduate was appointed shadow justice secretary last year. Mahmood is expected to be sworn in as lord chancellor at the Royal Courts of Justice before the opening of parliament on 17 July.
The Conservatives, led by Rishi Sunak, have faced a devastating defeat in the UK election. This result is attributed to voter dissatisfaction with the cost of living crisis, failing public services, and a series of scandals that have plagued the Conservative government.
