WASHINGTON: The White House has cancelled a Ramadan iftar meal following several Muslim Americans rejected the invitation in protest of President Joe Biden’s support for Israel’s war on Gaza, Arab media reported on Wednesday.
Arab media citied sources as saying that the development took place on Tuesday following Muslim community members warned leaders against attending the iftar meal.
Edward Ahmed Mitchell, the deputy director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said that the iftar meal was nixed as many people chose not to attend, including invitees who had earlier agreed to go.
Mitchell said that the Muslim community in the US said very early on that it would be totally unacceptable for them to break bread with the very same White House that is aiding the Israeli government to starve and kill Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
Meanwhile, UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese said that based on an assessment, that she firmly believes the Israeli army “intentionally killed” seven aid workers in Gaza to scare donors of humanitarian help and ensure the continued famine of Palestinians.
Albanese, the UN’s Ambassador on the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory, stated that having knowledge of the Israeli army’s operating procedures, the killings were conducted deliberately so that donors would pull out and civilian population in the Gaza Strip would continue to be famished silently.
In a statement via social media, she said that Israel knows Western countries would not move a finger for Palestinian people. She said that Israel is crossing every red line, still will full exemption. She said, “Sanctions now. Indictments now.”
