OAKLAND: The high-profile legal battle between Elon Musk and OpenAI has entered its second week, with senior company figures set to testify in a case that could influence the future of the artificial intelligence industry.

Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s co-founder and president, is scheduled to take the stand as Musk’s legal team continues its challenge against the company’s current structure.

Musk is seeking to compel OpenAI to return to a non-profit model, arguing that its evolution into a commercial entity contradicts its original mission.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is expected to testify later, while Satya Nadella may also appear in court as scrutiny grows over Microsoft’s financial backing of the AI firm.

During earlier proceedings, Musk said he contributed $38 million between 2016 and 2020 and presented himself as an early supporter aiming to counterbalance dominant tech players.

Company’s future direction

He has repeatedly warned about the risks of profit-driven artificial intelligence development.

The case carries significant implications for OpenAI, which is valued at more than $850 billion and is preparing for a potential public offering.

A ruling in Musk’s favour could disrupt those plans and reshape the company’s future direction.

OpenAI’s legal team has challenged Musk’s claims, pointing to his own expanding AI ambitions through ventures such as xAI.

The trial is being closely watched, with analysts noting that its outcome could influence the broader AI landscape, where competition among major firms continues to intensify.
