ISLAMABAD: Mushaal Hussein Mullick, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Human Rights on Tuesday urged people to break their silence and confront the issue of gender-based violence.
She was addressing the United Nations One-Day Conference on Gender-Based Violence, a gathering of diverse participants and partners held in Islamabad.
Drawing from her own experience, Mullick recounted a distressing incident during her visit to her imprisoned husband. She described an intrusive search that left her feeling demoralized and harassed. This experience, she said, led her to emphasize the importance of speaking up against such injustices.
Inspired by the resilience of Kashmiris, Mullick emphasized the enduring spirit of political struggle ingrained in the Indian illegally occupied Kashmir region. She underscored the transformative journey survivors undertake, encouraging them to recognize their newfound strength and resilience.
She highlighted the intricate web of obstacles, including environmental factors that can overshadow the formalities of legal processes.
Mullick stressed the significance of counseling and empowerment for survivors of gender-based violence. She called for collective efforts from both men and women, underlining the vital role men play in uplifting the spirits of the women around them.
Addressing the pervasive gender wage gap across sectors, Mullick advocated for bridging this divide to create a more equitable society. She acknowledged prior governmental endeavors and urged for sustained progress in this direction.
A stark revelation emerged as Mullick condemned sexual violence in Kashmir, alleging Kashmiris girls are being raped in Indian Army camps and rape cases are often supported by the state rather than isolated incidents. She brought attention to the distressing cases of sexual assault on Kashmiri women within Indian army camps.
While commending advancements in combating gender-based violence, Mullick emphasized the necessity for further action. Her call for unity against these atrocities and her powerful declaration that silence is not an option resonated profoundly.
