MOSCOW: A court in a Russian border region has sentenced a Ukrainian person to 12 years in jail on espionage charges for passing defense information to Kyiv’s secret services, local media reported.
Russia has apprehended and imprisoned dozens of persons for allegedly cooperating with Ukraine’s military and intelligence agencies since it launched its military offensive in 2022.
In a statement, the court said via Telegram that the court found that the accused was engaged by the Ukrainian intelligence services to collect information regarding the presence of Russian forces on the territory of the Bryansk area.

Russia’s Bryansk region has been the site of multiple shelling and drone assaults and a cross-border incursion by a pro-Ukrainian group last year. The Bryansk courts service said that the perpetrator pleaded guilty and the trial was heard behind closed doors.
Earlier, on Wednesday, Russian media reported a court in the southern city of Rostov-on-Don has sentenced a Ukrainian person to 11-and-a-half years in jail for trying to buy “top secret” missile components. As per media reports, both men were sentenced on espionage allegations.
