ISLAMABAD: US President Joe Biden said on Thursday that Russia has freed US female basketball player Brittney Griner in a high-level prisoner exchange with Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) facilitated the release of female basketball player, according to TRT.

The prisoner swap, that took place on Thursday, achieved a big goal for Biden at a time of high tensions over Ukraine but carried a heavy cost of releasing the notorious Russian arms dealer.

Basketball player needs times to recover from trauma

The White House said in a separate statement that the player Giner will need time to recover from trauma of captivity in Russia. Giner deserves privacy, space, and time with her loved ones to heal and recover from the ordeal in Russia.

The exchange deal, the second of its type in eight months with Russia, brought about the release of the most famous US citizen detained abroad.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also confirmed the deal, saying the exchange happened in Abu Dhabi.
