ISLAMABAD: Belarus said on a Telegram channel that a Ukrainian missile fell on its territory on Thursday, floating fears of the conflict spilling over, with the Moscow ally sending investigators to find the cause of the incident.
According to the Telegram channel that is close to the presidency, soon after the incident, President Alexander Lukashenko was updated on the issue.
It further said an S-300 missile from Ukrainian territory landed between 10 am and 11 am local time (0700 GMT and 0800 GMT) but provided no specific location adding that the missile either deviated from its trajectory or was shot down by Belarusian air defense authorities. No information on injuries or casualties has been reported till the filing of the report.
Earlier in November, a missile landed in a village in Poland, killing two people, sparked huge concern and was near to creating tensions between the US-led alliance and Moscow.
Soon after the November incident, Russian authorities denied having fired the missile, while Warsaw said it was likely caused by a Ukrainian air defense missile system launched to intercept Russian attacks.
Belarus as Moscow ally
Meanwhile. Russia had mostly used the Belarusian territory as a launching platform for its Ukraine offensive.
In October, officials from the government of Belarus said it was establishing a joint regional force with Russia, with several thousand Russian servicemen arriving in the ex-Soviet country.
The development has fueled concern that Minsk could also send troops to Ukraine.
