AFGHANISTAN: A mortar mine exploded in Afghanistan’s southern Kandahar province on Monday, killing three children from the same family, Hafiz Aber, a spokesman of provincial police, confirmed on Tuesday.

The children had discovered the mortar mine, a relic of previous wars, on Monday night in the Haji Aziz neighbourhood of Kandahar City. The police said that as the siblings were playing with it, it unexpectedly detonated, killing the three on the spot.

Last week, a mortar mine blast claimed a man’s life in the eastern Logar province of Afghanistan.

Numerous individuals, primarily children, are injured or killed every month by explosions of unexploded devices left over from the four decades of wars, making Afghanistan one of the most mine-contaminated nations in the world.-APP
