BEIJING: The current escalation between Israel and Palestine occurred against the backdrop of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and right-wing forces in Israel pushing for tougher policies towards Palestine; more efforts are needed to promote reconciliation in the middle east as per analyses.
Furthermore, the US bias towards Israel creates an imbalance between Israel and Palestine, making it more difficult to mediate the conflict, according to Sun Degang, director of Fudan University’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies.
While the trend towards reconciliation has advanced among Gulf countries in the Middle East, it is disappointing to see no signs of improvement in the Israel-Palestine conflict, with the situation in some areas worsening, according to Sun.
The international community, including China, has urged the parties involved to hold discussions on multilateral platforms. Following the latest violence, UN Middle East envoy Tor Wennesland urged Israeli and Palestinian leaders to exercise restraint.
Sun stated that the current situation in Israel and Palestine demonstrated that traditional views on security have reached a dead end and that related countries should abandon their zero-sum mentality. He added that one country should not defend its security by violating the security of another.
