ISLAMABAD: Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Haris has spoken candidly about the widening gulf between Pakistan and other cricketing nations in adapting to the demands of modern-day cricket.

Talking to the media, the 24-year-old admitted that both individually and collectively, Pakistan is trailing behind the rest of the cricketing world in embracing contemporary styles of play.

“The world has moved far ahead of Pakistan in terms of modern cricket,” Haris stated.

He shared that he tailors his training sessions with modern cricket in mind and frequently consults coaches on how best to align with current standards.

“I train according to the needs of the modern game. I’m always discussing with coaches how to adopt the modern approach effectively. I aim to feature in upcoming tournaments playing the style that today’s cricket demands,” he said.

National team’s issues

Haris believes that many of the issues facing the national team could be resolved by embracing a more modern brand of cricket. He also discussed the importance of batting order, noting that while consistency helps, he is flexible and focused on the team’s success.

“Batting position is important for any player, but I’m happy to play wherever I’m needed. I don’t mind batting in different positions, as my primary goal is to contribute to the team,” he explained.

A keen learner, Haris underlined the value of advice from senior players—especially Babar Azam—and how it contributes to his development as a batter.

“I’m always picking up different aspects of batting from the senior lads. I make a point of speaking with experienced players like Babar Azam whenever I get the chance,” he said.

Genuine progress

He stressed, however, that genuine progress ultimately depends on individual discipline and hard work.

“No matter how much the seniors support you, it’s the player who has to put in the graft,” he remarked.

Speaking on the mental side of the game, Haris highlighted the importance of handling pressure and taking the initiative early in an innings.

“There’s pressure on both sides—whether it’s a top batter or bowler. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t—but my mindset is always to take on the bowler early with positive intent,” he said.

“Batting technique plays a vital role in T20s. A solid technique helps you adapt to various match situations,” he concluded.
