LONDON: In an editorial, The Observer, a prominent British newspaper, has raised concerns about the impact of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s response to the assassination of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on India’s relationship with Western nations. The assassination of Nijjar, a Canadian citizen, took place on June 18 outside a Sikh temple in British Columbia, and it has sent currents through diplomatic circles.

Political assassinations are not a novelty in the world’s history, with numerous high-profile figures falling victim to such acts over the centuries. However, Nijjar’s case is unique, as he was a prominent campaigner for Khalistan, a Sikh homeland in Punjab, and his activism appears to be the motive behind his murder. Nevertheless, The Observer argues that Nijjar’s death was indeed a political assassination.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau publicly accused Indian government agents of involvement in Nijjar’s murder, citing intelligence from the Five Eyes network, which includes the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. India swiftly rejected Trudeau’s claim, but questions lingered about potential Indian involvement in the killing.

The aftermath of Trudeau’s accusations has raised concerns among Western governments, including the US and UK, about a diplomatic dispute with India. Leaders from Western nations discussed the issue at the G20 summit, seeking a resolution.

Sikh Leader’s Murder Raises Doubts About India’s Reliability as Western Partner

However, Modi’s response to the situation exacerbated tensions. India expelled a Canadian diplomat and suspended visa services and trade talks, a move viewed by many as provocative. The Observer opines that Modi’s actions may be perceived as purblind arrogance, putting strain on the India-West alliance.

Critics argue that Trudeau’s stance may be influenced by domestic political considerations, particularly Canada’s significant Sikh minority and the perception of the Khalistan movement as a “separatist” force. On the other hand, Modi, an authoritarian populist, may view confronting Canada as aligning with his Hindu ultra-nationalist agenda, which could play a role in his actions.

India is considered an essential ally by the UK and the US in the context of the China-India conflict. However, The Observer points out that recent actions by the Modi government, including the assassination of Nijjar, have raised doubts about India’s commitment to democracy and its reliability as a Western partner.

The evolving situation continues to draw attention from international observers, as the India-West alliance faces a testing period amidst allegations, diplomatic moves, and rising tensions.
