NEW DELHI: Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government on Wednesday during a no-confidence debate in the parliament over its handling of deadly violence continued from more than three months in Manipur.
At least 180 people have been killed and over 60,000 dislocated due to clashes between the Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur.
Opposition parties have accused Prime Minister Modi of remaining silent over the unabated violence, despite tens of thousands of security personnel being stationed in the region.
Gandhi said during the second day of debate that “I am saying Manipur but the truth is there is nothing of Manipur left in Manipur. You have divided Manipur into two parts,” according to Indian media.
He said that it was the reason Modi did not visit Manipur. He has killed Mother India in Manipur.
Gandhi asked that if the prime minister is not listening to the heart of the country, whose voice does he listen to?
It is to be noted that Manipur is ruled by the Prime Minister Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party.
Rahul Gandhi criticizes Modi over communal violence
Continuing his barrage against the PM, Gandhi accused the government of fuelling communal violence in India, while speaking about the recent clashes between Muslims and Hindus in Haryana which is another BJP-ruled state.
He was addressing the parliament for the first time since his membership was restored following the apex court’s suspension of his conviction and 2-year sentence for defamation that resulted in his disqualification.
The no-confidence motion against Modi was moved by the opposition parties’ new alliance “INDIA” last week.
