NEW YORK: Miss USA 2023, Savannah Gankiewicz, has shared her reflections on embracing the crown following a shocking resignation scandal earlier this year. Gankiewicz, who assumed the title in May after Noelia Voigt’s unexpected departure, has spoken out about her rewarding experience despite the initial backlash.
In May, Voigt, the original Miss USA 2023 titleholder, resigned suddenly, citing mental health concerns and alleging a toxic work environment within the Miss USA organization. These allegations were firmly denied by Laylah Rose, CEO of the Miss USA organization.
Just over a week after Voigt’s resignation, Savannah Gankiewicz, aged 28, was announced as the new Miss USA 2023. Gankiewicz, who had been the first runner-up, faced some criticism and skepticism over her quick ascension to the title. Despite this, she has expressed no regrets about accepting the crown.
“I can’t speak on their experience, but I can only judge from mine and it has been nothing but great,” Gankiewicz told People magazine. “I’ve had the best time of my life, the best three months of my life. I’m honestly so grateful that I took this opportunity and I didn’t get scared to not take it.”
Reflecting on the initial negativity, Gankiewicz acknowledged that while the transition was challenging, it has ultimately been a fulfilling journey. “The initial backlash was tough, but I’ve grown from it,” she said. “I use this role as a tool to show that no one can bring you down—you can elevate yourself.”

During her tenure, Gankiewicz has used her platform to highlight important causes. She has been particularly vocal about the Maui wildfires and has leveraged her role to support her own non-profit organization.
“I was able to shed light on the Maui wildfires and my non-profit,” she said. “I truly believe in the Miss USA organization. It has given me the tools I need for success. The growth I’ve experienced during this time makes me feel confident and empowered, and that’s all I want for other young women.”
Gankiewicz also addressed the responsibility she felt when stepping into the role. “My first thoughts when I heard about the resignation were with Voigt and her mental state. Then, I thought about how pageant protocol dictates that in the event the winner is unable, the first runner-up is supposed to step up,” she explained.
