LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Technical Committee chairman Misbahul Haq on Monday defended national team captain Babar Azam as his side came under massive criticism following its poor performance in the recently concluded Asia Cup.
At a press conference, Misbahul Haq admitted the mistakes made by the team in matches of the mega-event.
Last week, the Indian top order completely dominated Pakistan, who had no answer to the batting onslaught by K.L. Rahul and Virat Kohli.
Asked to chase a gigantic total of 357, Green Shirts could not rise to the occasion and folded for 128. The failure sparked massive criticism of Babar Azam’s captaincy.
Amid the criticism, Haq hoped that Green Shirts would stage a comeback in the upcoming ODI World Cup, which is set to start on October 5 in India.
Haq said that the performance of the team in the Asia Cup was disappointing, but at the same time, he underscored that wins and losses were part of the game.
He said that the burden of the high-margin defeat could not only be put on Babar Azam’s shoulder; instead, it is a failure of the whole team.
Responding to a query about the World Cup squad, Haq said the board should not take any decision in haste.
Haq Opposes Extensive Changes in Squad for World Cup
He also opposed extensive changes in the squad, saying such a move could disturb the team’s chemistry and serve a blow to the morale of the players.
