LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reshaped its men’s selection committee, confirming the appointment of former captains Misbah-ul-Haq and Sarfaraz Ahmed as members of the panel.

The updated composition of the committee was published on the PCB’s official website, marking a change in the selection structure following the recent resignation of former international umpire Aleem Dar.

Dar stepped down from his role as selector three days ago.

The restructured committee now consists of four members — Misbah-ul-Haq, Sarfaraz Ahmed, former fast bowler Aaqib Javed and ex-batter Asad Shafiq.

Dar’s departure reportedly followed internal disagreements within the panel.

He is believed to have opposed the inclusion of Babar Azam, Shadab Khan and Usman Khan in Pakistan’s squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Dar had also reportedly supported wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan, suggesting he should be promoted to the number six position in the batting order.

Inconsistent performances

He argued that if other players were being backed despite inconsistent performances, Rizwan should receive similar support and opportunity.

The dynamics within the committee contributed to Dar’s dissatisfaction. During selection meetings, Aaqib Javed was said to frequently support the views of then-head coach Mike Hesson.

Meanwhile, Misbah-ul-Haq — who was already part of the panel at the time — reportedly did not actively challenge several key decisions, leaving Dar feeling his opinions carried limited weight.

Dar had joined the selection panel on October 11, 2024, as part of a revamped committee that also included Aaqib Javed, former Test captain Azhar Ali and analyst Hasan Cheema.

Pakistan’s recent T20 World Cup campaign has intensified scrutiny of the selection process. The team failed to progress beyond the Super Eights stage after their match against New Zealand was washed out and they suffered defeat to England. Their campaign also included a heavy loss to India.

Dar’s resignation ends a brief stint in administration following a distinguished umpiring career. He holds the record for officiating the most men’s international matches — 435 across Tests, ODIs and T20Is — including four World Cup finals.
