LAHORE: Former Pakistan cricket team captain Misbah-ul-Haq expressed his confidence that the national team, led by Babar Azam, has a strong chance of winning the upcoming International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s One-Day International (ODI) World Cup, set to be held in India later this year.
Speaking to journalists in Lahore on Saturday, Misbah emphasized the need for the Pakistan team management to devise a strategy for the prestigious tournament.
The former player, who captained the national team in the ICC World Cup 2015 in Australia, stated, “Pakistan has a strong chance to win the World Cup in India this year.”
Highlighting the team’s strengths, he said, “Three of our batters are in the top ICC rankings. We have good bowling options. The key is to make the right plans at the right time, select a competitive team, and approach the World Cup with determination.”
The Pakistan cricket team last secured the 50-over format World Cup victory in 1992 under the captaincy of Imran Khan. Misbah also emphasized the importance of batting in achieving success in India, noting that Indian wickets favor batsmen.
Misbah-ul-Haq urges batters to work hard, devise solid plans
He urged the Pakistani batters to work hard and devise solid plans ahead of the tournament. Additionally, Misbah recommended organizing more One-Day Internationals (ODIs) for the team, stating that match practice would help the players get into rhythm before the World Cup.
However, Pakistan’s participation in the tournament remains uncertain due to the ongoing deadlock between Pakistan and India over the Asia Cup. India has refused to travel to Pakistan for the event due to political differences.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has proposed a hybrid model with two options to resolve the situation. The first option suggests that India plays its matches at a neutral venue, while all other matches are held in Pakistan.
The second option involves four group stage matches taking place in Pakistan, followed by the remaining matches, including the final, at a neutral venue.
