NAYPYIDAW: At least three students were killed in an early morning military raid on Friday in Myanmar’s northwest, a student union said.

In Myanmar, the military regime has unleashed deadly violence on its opponents since the army toppled Aung San Suu Kyi’s civilian government in a coup in February 2021.

The military regime is facing resistance from anti-coup militias of the People’s Defence Force and long-established ethnic rebel armies.

The All-Burma Federation of Student Unions (ABFSU) said on a Facebook post that the students had been killed in a raid on an office on Friday where activists were staying in the Budalin township, Sagaing region.

The region — a hub of anti-junta resistance — has witnessed heavy fighting in recent months.

ABFSU last week had posted photos on social media of student activists protesting the military regime with flags and banners.

A local villager who requested not to be named said the 3 student activists, aged late teens to early 20s, succumbed to the stab wounds, according to AFP.

The villager said that they stabbed knives into students’ chests and cut out their tongues. At least 5 were torched in the incident, and an unknown number of people were apprehended.

Military Regime’s Violence

Over 3,800 civilians have lost lives since the putsch in the junta’s violent crackdown on dissent, according to a local monitoring group.

The military regime puts the death toll at nearly 5,000 people, including teachers.
