KARACHI: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Thursday that the launch of the state-of-the-art MILGEM Class Warship PNS Tariq was a major step towards indigenization and self-reliance in the defense sector.
The prime minister, who jointly launched PNS Tariq along with Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz in Karachi, said that the MILGEM project opened new avenues of closer collaboration between Pakistan and Turkiye and would prove to be an important icon of our friendship.
Fourth Ship of MILGEM
PNS Tariq is the fourth Ship of MILGEM Class and the second one being built in Pakistan.
The premier said that maritime trade activities would increase manifold with the growth in the financial and industrial base of Pakistan. This would create the need for more capacity to support expansion in the maritime sector.
He said that Pakistan remained committed to developing maritime infrastructure along the coast from Karachi to Gwadar to prepare itself as the future trans-shipment and trade hub in the region.
MILGEM Class Ships will also play an important role in meeting the security needs, he added.
