LOS ANGELES: American singer-songwriter and actress, Miley Cyrus has just revealed that she was not allowed to sing Hannah Montana songs, music which so many of her fans grew up with.

The Disney Channel series, which premiered in 2006, starred “Easy Lover” singer Miley Cyrus as Hannah Montana—a pop star living a secret double life to enjoy a normal teenage existence.

During her time on the show, Miley released five Hannah Montana albums, along with one live album and two remix compilations. Under Disney’s Hollywood Records label, she also released three solo albums before transitioning to RCA Records, where she launched her breakthrough album Bangerz in 2013.

Now, speaking on The Ringer podcast, the “Wrecking Ball” singer revealed that Disney once prohibited her from performing songs from her Hannah Montana era.

“It’s not like I wanted to,” she explained, adding, “Performing The Best of Both Worlds between We Can’t Stop and Wrecking Ball wouldn’t have really made sense.”

“It was still sad knowing those songs have my voice, my face, and I wasn’t allowed to sing them,” Miley added.

In 2024, Miley Cyrus, known for her hit Angels Like You, was honoured as the youngest-ever inductee into the Disney Legends Hall of Fame. Reflecting on the recognition, she joked, “I definitely wasn’t created in a lab, and if I was, there must’ve been a bug in the system that caused me to malfunction somewhere between 2013 and ’16. Sorry, Mickey [Mouse].”

Following her induction, Disney granted her permission to perform her Hannah Montana songs again. “After being inducted as a Disney Legend, I was given permission to perform those songs in the future, which is pretty cool,” she shared.
