LONDON: Migrants have clashed with authorities in Italy after demanding they be moved from landing sites to other areas across the country, Western media reported on Thursday.
Hundreds of new migrants complained about their living conditions on the island of Lampedusa.
Italy has faced a rise in migration from the Mediterranean, with boats and fishing vessels coming from North Africa weekly.
Lampedusa is a popular arrival port owing to its location as the first entry into Europe from the Mediterranean Sea.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has said the issue of relocation is secondary adding the major concern for the Italian authorities is how to stop the arrivals in the European state.
Italy’s landing ports are currently operating at maximum capacity, with reception centres overcrowded.
In recent days almost 7,000 migrants, including 257 children have landed on Lampedusa.
Italian authorities are carrying out speedy migrant transfers from the island to ease pressure on landing sites and reception centres.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has stated the solutions cannot be found at the national level, but only at the European level.
