MEXICO CITY: At least 15 people including migrants were killed in a devastating bus accident in northeastern Mexico when the bus carrying locals and migrants plunged into a ravine on Thursday.
Local media reports indicated that among the fatalities were citizens from India and Africa. However, the fire department official stated that they fear there may be more casualties.
The ill-fated bus was en route from Mexico City to northwestern Tijuana, which shares a border with San Diego, a common starting point for many migrants attempting to seek refuge in the United States.
Incidents Involving Migrants in Mexico
This is not the first tragic incident involving migrants in Mexico. In February, a bus carrying migrants from Venezuela, Colombia, and Central America crashed between the southern state of Oaxaca and central Puebla, resulting in the death of at least 17 people.
Deadly road accidents are sadly a recurring issue in Mexico, often attributed to factors such as high speeds, poor vehicle conditions, or driver fatigue. The country heavily relies on buses, some of which are operated by small transportation companies serving remote communities with aging vehicles.
This tragedy serves as another reminder of the urgent need for improved road safety measures and infrastructure in Mexico to prevent such devastating accidents.
