BRUSSELS: “Starfield,” one of the most highly anticipated video games in recent years, makes its global debut on Wednesday with the hype and production standards of a Hollywood blockbuster. Microsoft has a multi-billion-dollar stake in its success.

This ever-evolving game represents the tech giant’s effort to solidify its player base within the Xbox subscription service, following substantial investments in the gaming sector, which is valued at $200 billion worldwide.

“Starfield” is a sprawling, universe-spanning, role-playing sci-fi game created by the US-based studio Bethesda, which Microsoft acquired as part of a $7.5 billion deal in 2020, aimed at enhancing Xbox’s appeal in competition with Sony’s PlayStation.

Microsoft Navigating Regulatory Scrutiny

Microsoft is currently navigating regulatory scrutiny for its proposed $75 billion acquisition of another studio, Activision Blizzard, renowned for “Call of Duty,” amid concerns about rapid industry consolidation.

Anticipation for “Starfield” has been fueled by an impressive Metacritic rating of 87 out of 100, based on early play-throughs by both critics and players.
