Mexico: Two Die After Hot Air Balloon Catches Fire mid-Air

MEXICO CITY: A hot-air balloon caught fire over the archaeological site of Teotihuacan in Mexico, leaving two dead and injuring a minor, local government said on Saturday.

Those killed in the tragic incident were a 39-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man, meanwhile, a child suffered second-degree burns to the face and a fracture of the right femur.

The mishap occurred at 8:40 am as the balloon headed out on a flight over the famous Teotihuacan archaeological site near Mexico city. In a video circulating on social media, the balloon’s gondola is seen bursting into flames, causing passengers to jump off.

Identities of the victims have not been revealed, nor did the authorities say if there were any other passengers on the balloon.

Every morning, dozens of hot air balloons fly over Teotihuacan, a popular tourist destination 45 miles northeast of Mexico City.

Once a flourishing pre-Columbian city, Teotihuacan was built 1000 years prior to the Aztecs. It links the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, the Pyramid of the Moon and the Pyramid of the Sun.

Each year, millions of visitors visit the place from all over the world.
